How to Determine the Right Dose of Dried Psilocybin Mushrooms to Consume to Have an Enjoyable Trip

When we speak of dried mushrooms and about how much you should consume to enjoy a safe trip, we typically refer to grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms such as those available for purchase at Pharmer’s Market.

Different types of mushrooms contain different amounts of psilocybin and psilocin, the psychoactive compounds that enable you to trip. But because there are almost 200 different types of psilocybin mushrooms species, how to figure out what the right dose is for you can take some figuring.

It might be helpful to think of psilocybin mushrooms as you do cannabis. No doubt you are aware that cannabis comes from many different strains that vary in strength and that produce different experiences when consumed.  Think of magic mushrooms in a similar fashion—they originate from various types of species and have various intensities. And similarly, how a psilocybin mushroom is grown, dried and stored can also affect how potent it is.

As Pharmer’s Market mostly sells dried mushrooms, let’s take an exclusive look at determining that. Suffice to say that if you’re a beginner, we ask that you take the following to heart: Start with a low dose and work your way up to a stronger dose after several successful trips without any distressing incidents.

Another thing you may wish to consider before determining the dosage, is how well you wish to function when socially interacting. For example, if you plan to trip with friends or your partner, you probably want to choose a lower dose—one that enables you to stay connected. However, if your purpose is more to pursue a spiritual journey or an effort to discover more about yourself, you may select a higher dose—if you’re already an experienced tripper.

The general consensus recommendation for a first trip dose lies somewhere between 0.5 and 2 grams of dried mushrooms.  Even at this low to moderate dose you could possibly still have visions or other challenging thoughts. Again, it needs to be stressed that it is highly recommended to familiarize your mind and body with how psychedelics work before launching yourself on a higher dose of magic mushrooms.

How Magic Mushrooms Work in the Body

The communication network in your brain depends on neurons passing messages to other neurons. The messages from one neuron are transmitted along a single fibre called an axon and received by a multitude of short branches called dendrites. As the information passes from one neuron to the next, it must jump across countless tiny gaps called synapses. This is where brain chemicals called neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, come into play. When information reaches the end of one neuron’s axon, they carry it across the gap to receptors on the next neuron.

After taking psilocybin, your body will convert it into the active ingredient psilocin, which is chemically similar to serotonin. And the neurotransmitter, serotonin, is thought to be responsible for producing feelings of joy and happiness. Psilocin is thought to increase your levels of serotonin because it binds to the same receptors in your brain.

Psilocybin can cause vivid hallucinations, make colours seem oversaturated and dissolve distinct boundaries between objects. Sometimes the drug may have more significant effects with some trippers reporting intensely spiritual experiences or emotional journeys that conclude with them being more appreciative of art, literature and drama. Another common short-term effect of mushrooms is a distorted sense of reality, mixing up senses and an altered sense of time.

Shrooms are also known to induce nausea, dizziness, mood swings, anxiety, confusion and paranoia. So please ensure that you are in a safe and comfortable environment when taking shrooms. A trip can last between about three to ten hours, depending on the dosage and suffice to say that having a bad trip for that long can be stressful.

Make a Nice Brew and Drink Up!

A great way to enjoy dried psilocybin mushrooms is by making it into a tea. It’s very simple. Beginner’s should weigh out your dose that can be anywhere from 0.5 to 2 grams of dried magic mushrooms. Place the dose of mushrooms in a mortar and pestle or a small food blender or processor. Blend until the dried mushrooms are blitzed into a fine powder. To ensure that the tea tastes good enough to drink, try flavouring it with something like fresh minced ginger. Just peel a one-to-two-inch piece of fresh raw ginger root then grate it using a small fine grater, discarding any of the larger pieces and stringy bits that remain. Place the powdered mushrooms and minced ginger into a tea pot and add hot water. Add honey to taste. Let it steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Drink all of the tea, consuming all of the little mushroom bits. Then sit back, relax and wait for your journey to begin.
